David Frum: ‘Hamas started the war. Let Israel finish it’

Hamas militants launched an unprecedented surprise attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip early on Saturday morning, killing at least 250 Israelis. The Hub’s Sean Speer spoke with David Frum about what happens next in the region and what the response should be in Canada and the rest of the world.

The news yesterday morning was shocking. The Hub is grateful that we’re able to draw on David’s experience and wisdom to make sense of these attacks and their aftermath.

This is the first I have heard that Hamas leadership is sheltered by Qatar. It can’t be coincidence that this weekend’s F1 race is in Qatar. Wow.

The first thing that should happen in Canada is the Anti Isreal Palestine Appologists celebrating this attack should immediately be fired from their jobs for “hate speech” and inveestigated for “supporting terrorism”.
After that, Canada must strongly support Isreal’s absolute right to “end this” existential threat to their people, by any means necessary to compleatly errdicate Hamas. It should also end, once and for all, any concept of a “right of return” for any “Palestinian” born outside of Isreal after 15 May 1948 and any “Palestinian” born before that who has supported the PLA or Hama or any other terrorist organization.

It looks as though Hamas is taking a page from Putin’s book, targeting civilian neighbourhoods. This is disgraceful.

There have been plenty of civilians killed on both sides of this conflict. And the dying will continue until there is a lasting peace agreement and a homeland for the Palestinian people.

I agree totally with Mr Frum.
I disagree with the softness of our current Government in dealing with non Democratic countries.
I also think Trudeau should cut India off by removing all Diplomats from India until the murder case is resolved and start over once the murder charge has been registered. At the moment India is taking the lead and making Canada look Weak and Wimpy

Canada IS weak and wimpy as is Trudeau. But that doesn’t mean we want a change of GVT. and guns blast to the right with the other crazies.
I would hate to see Israel retaliate by lobbing bombs at the citizens of Palestine.
I hope they will retaliate by sanctions rather than carpet bombs.

Frum observes “Authoritarian governments conduct influence operations here. Jewish
communities are exposed to intimidation and outright violence by local sympathizers with international terrorist organizations”. I wonder to which events here in Canada he refers. I don’t recall any. I suggest that pundits, aside from condemning Hamas and this “aktion” as a further example of why Hamas in most places is viewed as a terrorist organization, bite their tongues for a while to see once the dust settles, what Israeli does and whether Egypt, as it has in the past, brokers a ceasefire to stop the senseless destruction and loss of innocents’ lives on both sides, and to give negotiators an opportunity to get active.

Thank you David for your outlook. I appreciate your expertise and know your opinions on how to proceed are intelligent. knowing our enemies will help pick apart their terrorist organizations. Prayers for the missing and captured innocent Israelis, soldiers and civilians in Israel.

This may be the ‘Tet’ moment that pushes a peace deal to the table.
