In their new book, Lukianoff and Schlott trace the rise of cancel culture from 2014, when canceling appeared uncontrolled in academia, the media, and the sciences. But something has changed since October 7, and the backlash has already started for those in higher education who are explicitly supporting Hamas.
Let me say thank you to The Hub for the opportunity to express my views even if they are often different from what is written in the articles.
When I first read the title of this discussion, I thought, good, a point of view which will show that cancel culture is as much alive and well with conservatives and Conservatives as it is with liberals and Liberals. I was quickly and sorrily disappointed.
The author of the article cites many instances where the ideas of those who stand in opposition to the Israeli solution, (which if it is not genocide, is pretty close to it) are misguided and misinformed.
It is not the role of educators at any level of education to mold and form opinion. It is the role of educators to bring out the answers which students hold within by asking the right questions. This educators do by introducing students to the best ideas of the best people from all walks of life in all ages. There is much good in the writings of antiquity and by no means should these writings be cancelled as out of date. There are many good ideas contained within the writings of modern authors and students should be reading and discussing them. To cancel out either source is a failure to promote the best in education.
There are as many on the right as there are on the left who are not reading, who are not critical thinkers, who are repeating ad nauseam the talking points of those they support. Talking points are not fact and using talking points is an intellectual failure.
There is right and wrong on both sides of the culture wars and until we are willing admit that, these wars will just go on dividing us as a people. Let’s stop pointing the finger at each other and take the time to hear what we have in common so we can build a better future.

The Marxist academics who have stolen students’ freedom of mind and tuition money should be disciplined, even fired, and have their bank accounts frozen.

The corporate takeover of University curriculum along with their financing as ensured that the corporate mentality is being reinforced. Call academics marxist is a signal of a non university education.

Like A. Chezzi this content surprised me. To even hint that freedom of speech should be limited is troubling to me. Rather, I propose that freedom of speech always be viewed through a moral prism. While I accept that the political situation in Gaza sucks, and that people might want to speak out to represent this, morality should always prevail. While proposing genocide might feel to activists as a sign of unrestrained strength and resolve, it also sends a message of warped or non-existent morality. I wish for all to remain civil.

This is not governance . It’s something sinister.
