A recent survey of Gaza and West Bank Palestinians by the Arab World Research and Development group finds that more than 75 percent of respondents said that they support "the military operation carried out by the Palestinian resistance led by Hamas on October 7."

Amal Attar-Guzman cites several polling sites and surveys that pertain to Hamas’ power and how they are viewed by Palestinians. What are your thoughts on these polls and the “hardening attitudes” of Palestinians?

First, the source of the poll has to be questioned. If it is indeed accurate, there will be no peace in the region. Canada will have to stop taking immigrants from Palestine as well. There is no place in Canada for a group that screams DEATH to ISRAEL at every opportunity. We will not become a safe haven for terrorists from anywhere.

Why whould anyone be surprised that Hamas enjoys the support of a substantial majority of Palestinians. Hamas is the only current entity in Palestine that resists the 75 years of brutality by Israel in its efforts to drive Palestinians from their land. Justifying its actions by claims that they are needed to defend the security of the Israeli people and its existence is pure propaganda as is the branding of Hamas as a terrorist organization. It is no more of a terrorist organization than the Stern Gang or Irgun. Israel’s need to look at how they might respond should the positions be reversed. In the context of Israel’s actions, Hamas not recognizing Israel’s right to exist is not any different than applying the same condemnation to Nazi Germany or other brutal regimes.

I have just finished reading the book, Peace Not Apartheid, by President Carter. He lifted a very heavy load working for peace in the the war torn Israel/Palestine. He points out that time and again, in the many attempts to create peace, the Israelis were intransigent in their demands on the Palestinians and that the Palestinians were willing to give more than they would receive. Land grabs on the part of the Israelis, the suppression of movement of Palestinians, the constant changing red tape which made it almost impossible for Palestinians to eke out a daily living and finally the wall which created a concentration camp, were all aimed at getting rid of the Palestinians and taking over the land completely. The Israeli commitment to a two state solution was and is disingenuous. If there is to be a lasting peace, Israel must agree to a two state solution and stop the genocide. It must recognize the PLO as the authority and sit down in good faith to negotiate a peace. Hamas will not be defeated by the IDF. Hamas is an idea and ideas are not defeated by armies. Israel may occupy Gaza and the West Bank but it will not kill the idea of Hamas. The Israelis sowed the seeds for the this present insanity and they will continue to reap the harvest if they continue with their destructive actions. Netanyahu is not the person needed to win peace. He is not, nor has been committed to the peace process. Hamas is not the group needed to win peace. The Palestinian Authority must be reinstated and it must be supported by an Israeli cease fire and withdrawal from Gaza and the West Bank. The United States must stop it unconditional support of Israel and put conditions which are necessary to bring about peace. World leaders must use all their influence to stop Israel’s actions and work to create peace. It is in the best interest of everyone.

Several credible experts and history will contradict President Carter and pretty well everything you wrote. Nothing Israel could do would satisfy those whose only intent was to destroy the Jews.

Polls would ideally be conducted without people knowing that they are being polled. Not sure if this is ever done, or even possible.

They provide some useful information about a target groups current feelings, at least those that respond to polls, but they are certainly weak in determining what people will actually do in the future (vote for candidate/party x over y, change banks, go to a protest, buy a product, support a ballot measure, etc.).

These polls of Palestinians are of little value except to take the obvious emotional temperature in an incredibly intense situation.
